About Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK)

Established in 1967, the Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK) is Kenya’s leading Association for professionals in the built and natural environment in Kenya incorporating Architects, Quantity Surveyors, Town Planners, Engineers, Landscape Architects and Environmental Design Consultants and Construction Project Managers.

The Association is registered under the Societies Act and brings together professionals from the Private Sector, Public Sector and Academia. The Association also acts as a link between professionals and stakeholders in the construction industry: Including policymakers, manufacturers, real estate developers and financial institutions.

Mabati Rolling Mills Limited (MRM)

Mabati  Rolling  Mills  Limited  (MRM)  is  the  flagship  company  of  the  SAFAL  GROUP,  and  was  its founding operation, established in 1961 in Kenya. ​The Safal Group is Africa’s largest  steel manufacturer & supplier of Building Solutions in Africa with 36 operations in 8 countries while exporting to Africa & beyond.​

MRM has an integrated Coated steel facility at Mariakani producing world-class Coated and Painted Coated Steel products from which it manufactures a plethora of prestigious building solutions in its facilities across Kenya. MRM has service centers located in Nairobi (off Mombasa road), Kitengela, Thika, Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret, Mombasa, Kisumu, Kisii, Meru, and Nyeri. These centers avail customized building solutions to consumers. We also have a vast Distributor network across the country to ensure timely deliveries and availability of products to the market.

Award Categories

The winners are pioneers of our industry, the heroes winning over challenges and beating all odds. We have categorized the awards based on different factors that cuts across all backgrounds.

Best in Sustainability

Submissions under this category must exhibit commendable green building design principles in the local context. This includes architecture that complies with green building rating standards, application of new sustainable techniques in construction, unique use, re-use and recycling of alternative materials with low carbon rating. 

Best in Innovation

Submissions under this category must showcase a unique and innovative approach in the design and execution of a project. The problem being solved must be clearly outlined and the innovation must be relevant and applicable. This category includes iconic concepts that are not yet built but would offer a creative solution to the context at hand.

Best in Interior Environment

Submissions under this category must relay creative design for indoor space. The entries must add value to the space in terms of layout, ambience and comfort in a unique way through spatial arrangement, furniture, lighting and ventilation, textures and colours.

Best in Exterior Environment

Submissions under this category must showcase thoughtful design and implementation of an outdoor space from a micro-planning level to an urban planning stage. It can showcase deliberate use of wayfinding principles, universal access and measures for human comfort and safety while outdoors.

Application Process

  1. To submit your project, fill out the entry form in as much detail as possible. You will also be asked to upload relevant project files, including the SDS2 model.
  2. Submission is free - there is no entry fee for this competition
  3. We accept one entry per company, per category
  4. Each submitter must be using SDS2 Version 2018 and newer
  5. All projects must have been created within the last three years
  6. New buildings, major retrofits or expansion projects are eligible
  7. Complete and nearly complete projects can be submitted
  1. Contextual Appropriateness: Cultural, Environmental, Physical, Social Socio-Economic Impact
  2. Sustainability:Design, Process (Construction, others), Lifetime Use and Durability
  3. Creative use of Material Planning and Architectur
    • Satisfaction of client’s brief, particularly cost effectiveness
    • Environmental impact - Architectural excellence – Durability
    • Adaptability for changing requirements through its life
    • Efficiency of the use and provision of services - Conservation of energy

 4. Structural Engineering

  • Benefits achieved by using steel construction
  • Efficiency of design, fabrication and erection
  • Skill and workmanship
  • Integration of structure and services to meet architectural requirements
